Agriculture: I have personal concerns about the condition of our agricultural sector. Agriculture is an essential part of Utah's economy. I serve on the Budget Appropriations committee for the Department of Agriculture, Department of Natural Resources and Department of Environmental Quality and I am the Chair of the NRAE Standing committee and I understand the importance of agriculture to Utah's future. My grandfather was a rancher in Wayne County and I am a huge advocate for our farmers and ranchers. Without these integral members of our community we would not have food we eat and clothes we wear.
Business Regulations & Rules: Utah is recognized as one of the best States in the United States to do business in and I believe we need to continue to focus our efforts to maintain our leadership role in this critical area that effects economic growth and development.
Crime/Prisons: I have worked in Law Enforcement for over twenty-eight years and understand that we need to provide protection for law abiding citizens while protecting the constitutional rights of all who are afforded those protections under the Constitution.
Education Funding: We need to find ways to reduce class sizes and reward teachers so that we can retain the very best to educate our children and grandchildren and the leaders of the future. We must continue to build upon our successes and learn from our failures so that we can make sure we are providing the best education in the world.
Education Innovation/Accountability: We need to reward great teachers and remove bad ones, but I believe this applies in any field of employment. I also do not believe we can replace teachers with technology. I believe technology can make teachers more effective in some cases but we don't have to buy or force teachers to use every new program that is invented.
Environmental Regulations & Rules: Air Quality issues along with Land and water use have always played a major role in Utah's economic and political development. They are some of our most precious natural resources. Still, there is a lot of debate about how those resources should be used and by whom. I am always thinking about what we will pass on to our children and our grandchildren.
Energy Development: We have many natural resources in our State that we must look to as a method to keep energy costs as low as possible to keep our State competitive in the business market and we need to make sure the citizens of Utah benefit from this energy development.
Gas Prices: Utah is generally one of the lowest priced markets in the U.S. but I believe that with more State control of our natural resources within our States we could reduce gas prices even lower. The Federal Govt. tends to slow or impede our ability as a State to accomplish this.
Gun Rights: I am a member of the NRA and I am for any law abiding citizen that wants to carry or own a gun should be allowed to have that right as promised in the 2nd amendment of the Constitution.
Healthcare: I continue to look for ways we can reduce health care costs and if possible make it affordable enough so that anyone who desires to have health care can afford it.
Job Creation Incentives: I am an advocate for free enterprise and private sector job growth through keeping business regulations as simple as possible while protecting the public's best interest and safety.
Judiciary: I believe our courts should be held to the same accountable level as we place on the executive or legislative branch. If we require police officers to be recorded or videotaped while doing their job then perhaps judges should be also.
Local Government: All government is local and the closer to home that we can deal with problems or issues generally the better the outcome.
Transportation/Roads: This is one of the core components of the Government along with Public Safety (Defense) and Education. We must maintain a sound infrastructure to allow commerce to flourish and to allow for our safety in moving from one location to another. I do believe that there can and has been mismanagement in this area of Government and we must watch it closely.
State Parks and Wild Life: I am an advocate for our State Parks and Wild Life as they are some of the most precious resources that we have in our State and we must guard them as such.
Senior Issues: These are our parents and grandparents, heck it's me if you ask my kids. We must ever be aware of the needs of the generation that precedes us and make sure that we are taking adequate measures to ensure for their protection and security.
Taxes: As a fiscal conservative it is my belief that taxes do the most good when they are left in the pocket of the tax payer.
The State Budget: I am always looking for ways to keep our State budget in check and spend those precious dollars in an effective and fiscal way. I found a large amount of money being spent inappropriately this past session and thanks to my efforts it is no longer being wasted.
Veterans: Without these brave men and women we would have no government to run and none of the Freedoms that we have today. I respect, honor and revere these great men and women of our Country.
